Erik Werenskiold (1855-1938) was a Norwegian painter, illustrator, and writer, known for his work in the Norwegian Romantic Nationalist style. He studied at the Royal School of Art and Design in Copenhagen, Denmark, and later in Munich, Germany. He was a member of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters. Werenskiold is best known for his illustrations for the Norwegian fairy tale collection "Norske Folkeeventyr", and for his paintings depicting rural life in Norway. He also wrote several books, including "Illustrated Norwegian Fairy Tales" and "The Wild Duck". Werenskiold's work was highly influential in shaping the national identity of Norway during the late 19th century.
